Fillings

A cavity is a hole in the tooth caused by bacteria. Acid produced by the bacteria causes the breakdown of tooth structure. What we eat and drink not only nourishes us but also nourishes the bacteria. Foods high in sugars, acids, and carbohydrates can all contribute to the breakdown of our teeth. The enamel, dentin, and pulp can call be affected by decay. When the decay is located in the enamel and dentin a filling may be the appropriate treatment. Preventative Dentistry and Oral Hygiene

We offer aesthetic and reliable treatment for dental cavities. Owens Dentistry does not place metal or amalgam fillings. The use of composites allows for the removed, infected tooth structure to be replaced with a tooth-colored material that mimics the remaining natural tooth. Composite fillings have been used in early forms starting in the 1960s, today’s composites are much different and provide long-lasting, highly polishable, life-like restorations.

Resin modified glass ionomer fillings are another non-metal restorative material used in selective cases to replace missing tooth structure. This material can be used in pediatric teeth, certain adult teeth where a bonded composite is not appropriate. RMGI fillings can be placed close to the nerve, in areas where moisture control is difficult and would affect bonding composite, or in areas with a high risk of cavities because of its cavity inhibition and remineralization effects.
